Legacy of the crystal shard date
By the time of LotCS, the dragon has become an undead skeletal dragon. In the novel, Drizzt and Wulfgar slay a white dragon called Icingdeath that lairs inside the glacier. Sound familiar? I already was planning on adding content along the same lines as the Night King from Game of Thrones, and it looks like this is a winner. I certainly intend to utilize the heck out of the Frost Druids.Īkar died in the novel but returned in LotCS as an undead Wight spellcaster who creates zombies that attack the living in the frozen north, then turns his victims into even more zombies. I also may choose to play up other (alleged) Chosen of Auril like Bjornhilde (who is tragically underutilized in RotFM), Artus Cimber (who appears in ToA and is mentioned in SKT), and Davrick Fain (an Auril cult leader in LotCS). She's far more relatable than a literal god. OTOH, there's a pretty good chance that I replace a lot of the Auril content with Hedrun content. This seems to have inspired an entire chapter of RofFM, so I won't use BOTH the tower and Auril's island. LotCS features a Chosen of Auril, Hedrun Arnsfirth of the Elk Tribe, who has a tower in the Sea of Moving Ice. HOWEVER, if my players are super-interested in the Dwarvan Valley, the first resource I will grab is LotCS, which includes a couple of maps that are far more detailed that what little we get in RotFM. Since this seems to have inspired the Duergar storyline in RofFM, it is somewhat duplicative, so I probably won't use it. Silverstream is opposed by an evil rival, Baerick Hammerstone, who is mining black ice and forging magic items. I've already used him in my campaign at Gauntlgrym, but I may use the leader from LotCS, Stokley Silverstream. At the time of the novel, Bruenor was head of the Dwarves of Kelvin's Cairn. Since Bruenor has appeared in other 5e modules, and since the Battlehammer Dwarves are criminally underrepresented in RotFM, I'll focus on that. The Crystal Shard features core Salvatore characters like Drizzt, Bruenor, Regis, and Wulfgar. (For those who want to quibble about this, please see the disclaimer above.) Several NPCs from LotCS also appear in RotFM. The crystal remnants of this fortress are referred to as "black ice" in LotCS and "chardalyn" in RotFM. Apprentice wizard Akar Kessell found a very powerful sentient evil magic item that (among other things) could expand into a large crystal fortress, which ultimately was destroyed. Once upon a time, an Arcane Brotherhood caravan visited Icewind Dale. The (intentionally oversimplified) backstory goes something like this. Such a complaint is very much besides the point. So if I decide, say, that Regis is still the speaker of Lonelywood in my campaign world, please don't complain that it doesn't fit the lore timeline. I currently am researching Icewind Dale lore for the same reason. For example, when I ran the first part of BG:DiA early this year, I took A LOT of content directly from the D&D Next playtest adventure Murder in Baldur's Gate to flesh out the city. Rather, it is for DMs like me who want to mine related content for things that can be used to flesh out our campaign worlds. To any Drizzt fans and Realms lore nerds, the purpose of this post is NOT to convey that lore as historical fact in the campaign. Let's see if we can use any of this in our campaigns.
